POSITION SUMMARY
The Marilyn Davies College of Business at the University of Houston-Downtown is building its adjunct faculty position for the Master of Security Management (MSM) program. The MSM prepares working professionals to identify threats; both cyber and traditional and to lead risk-based security decisions at the enterprise level. We are looking for practitioners and educators who can bring that same judgment into the graduate classroom: people who have run a security program, managed a crisis, briefed an executive team, or built a risk function, and who want to help the next generation of security leaders do the same.
Adjunct appointments are made on a course-by-course basis according to enrollment and program need. Being added to the position does not guarantee a teaching assignment in any given term; faculty are contacted as sections become available in their area of expertise.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The MSM is a fully online graduate program designed for working security, risk, and compliance professionals. Students complete a core curriculum spanning executive leadership and communication, crisis and emergency communication, enterprise security management, risk analysis, the legal environment of the security executive, and cybercrime and computer forensics, with the option to pursue a Cybersecurity Graduate Certificate pathway alongside the degree. Graduates move into roles in corporate and business security, cybersecurity management, and enterprise risk leadership across industry and government.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teach assigned graduate courses online (and in hybrid or other approved formats as offered), meeting all courses, department, and university requirements and deadlines.
• Bring professional experience into the classroom through relevant cases, exercises, and applied assignments, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Create an engaging, rigorous learning environment suited to working adult professionals.
• Grade students work promptly, provide substantive feedback, and document attainment of course learning outcomes.
• Use the university’s learning management system (Canvas) and other approved instructional technology effectively.
• Stay current in the subject matter taught and participate in required orientation, training, assessment, and course-coordination activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree or higher in security management, cybersecurity, information systems, risk management, or a closely related field.
• Academic preparation is appropriate to the assigned course, normally a graduate degree in the discipline, or at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in the teaching field. Exceptional professional achievement may be considered in place of the credit-hour standard, consistent with university credentialing policy.
• Professional experience and subject-matter expertise sufficient to teach the assigned course at the graduate level.
• Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with a diverse population of graduate students, faculty, and staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Three or more years of progressive experience in enterprise security, cybersecurity, risk management, compliance, investigations, or emergency/crisis management.
• Recent leadership, consulting, or operational experience in corporate, government, military, healthcare, energy, financial-services, or other regulated or critical-infrastructure environments — Houston’s energy sector.
• Hands-on experience designing, running, or improving an enterprise security program across governance, risk, compliance, physical security, cybersecurity, or business continuity.
• Prior teaching, executive-education, corporate-training, or mentoring experience with adult professional audiences.
• Experience teaching online or hybrid courses and working within a learning management system.
• Current professional certification relevant to the assigned course — for example CISSP, CISM, CRISC, CISA, or Security+.
• Active professional engagement through practice, consulting, publications, conference presentations, standards work, or leadership in a professional association.
