American Sign Language Instructor, Remote

0

Yes. Given what you’ve learned from Erica, I’d make the Indeed post much more explicit about the contractor model upfront, so anyone applying already knows: U.S. contractor arrangement, their own Zoom, materials/prep included, $40 private and higher group rates.

I also would not require the instructor to be hearing or able to speak English aloud. You can find out during interviews what teaching/communication approach they use and build a mixed faculty naturally.

Online American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor

Speak! Language Center is seeking an experienced, engaging American Sign Language (ASL) instructor to join our growing team of independent-contractor language instructors.

Speak! has provided personalized language instruction to individuals, families, universities, businesses, and organizations since 2004. We recently expanded our programs to include ASL and are already receiving inquiries for private, family, and university group instruction.

This is a remote, part-time independent contractor position with flexible scheduling. Instructors may work with individual students, families, or small groups depending on availability and experience.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an instructor who:

• Is highly proficient or a native signer in American Sign Language

• Has experience teaching ASL to hearing students

• Can teach beginning through intermediate ASL

• Creates engaging, interactive, visually immersive lessons

• Incorporates Deaf culture and community into language instruction

• Is comfortable teaching children, teens, and/or adults

• Has experience teaching online via Zoom

• Can select and adapt appropriate instructional materials based on each student or group

• Is reliable, responsive, and comfortable working independently

Experience teaching families, university students, workplace groups, or children is especially welcome. ASLTA certification, formal ASL/Deaf Studies education, or college-level ASL teaching experience is a plus but not required.

How Speak! Lessons Work

Our programs are personalized rather than based on one required curriculum. Instructors select and adapt teaching materials according to students’ goals, experience, and learning styles.

Speak! handles student inquiries, enrollment, scheduling coordination, billing, and administrative support. Instructors provide the teaching, appropriate lesson preparation/materials, and their own professional Zoom account.

Compensation

Private instruction: $40/hour
Group instruction: $50+/hour, depending on group size

Preparation and adaptation of lesson materials are included in the instructional rate rather than paid separately.

Some family lessons with younger children may be scheduled in 30-minute sessions.

Contractor Requirements

This is an independent contractor position, not an employee position. Applicants must be able to work under Speak! Language Center’s U.S. independent-contractor arrangement and provide the appropriate U.S. tax documentation.
