Miami University invites applications for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor of Music Education to join an evolving
music program committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship,
collaboration, and innovation.

The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate music
education curriculum, maintain an active program of scholarly
and/or creative activity appropriate to a tenure-track appointment,
mentor students, and participate in service to the Department of
Music, College of Creative Arts, University, and profession.

The candidate is also encouraged to demonstrate strength in an
additional area of expertise that complements and expands the
Department of Music’s existing programs, curricular offerings, and
creative or scholarly activities.

Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

• Teach undergraduate music education courses as assigned,
including foundational coursework such as Introduction to Music
Education and instrumental methods courses.

• Teach additional courses based on departmental priorities and
the candidate’s expertise, interests, and additional area(s) of
strength.

• Supervise student teachers and coordinate clinical experiences
in public school settings.

• Advise and mentor undergraduate students and contribute to a
supportive, student-centered learning environment.

• Serve as faculty advisor for professional student music
organizations.

• Develop and sustain an active agenda of scholarship, research,
and/or creative activity consistent with expectations for tenure
and promotion.

• Identify, develop, and pursue appropriate internal and external
grant opportunities and other sources of funding to support
scholarly, creative, pedagogical, and program initiatives.

• Contribute service to the Department of Music, College of
Creative Arts, University, profession, and broader community as
appropriate.

• Participate in ongoing curriculum development, assessment,
recruitment, and program initiatives.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Doctorate in Music Education or a closely related field by the
date of appointment.

• Minimum of three years of successful K–12 instrumental music
teaching experience.

Consideration may be given to candidates with:

• Evidence of the potential for excellence in undergraduate
teaching.

• Evidence of the potential to establish and sustain a program of
scholarly, research, and/or creative activity appropriate to a
tenure-track appointment.

• Demonstrated success teaching music education at the collegiate
level.

• Experience with curriculum development, program coordination,
or supervision of clinical and student-teaching experiences.

• A student-centered approach to teaching, advising, and
mentoring.

• Evidence of emerging or established scholarly activity in music
education.

• Demonstrated strength in an additional area of musical,
pedagogical, scholarly, or creative expertise that would complement
and broaden the Department of Music’s existing strengths and
curricular offerings.

• Evidence of effective collaboration with colleagues, schools,
and community partners.
