The Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia (SONOVA) seeks an emerging conductor for a January–June 30, 2026 Conducting Fellowship. This fellowship offers hands-on conducting, rehearsal, and concert production experience with a community orchestra known for immersive, story-driven performances.

In addition to podium experience, the fellow participates in artistic planning and production elements that support the overall concert experience. Rehearsals and performances take place in Alexandria, Virginia, and regular in-person attendance is required.

Preferred start date: On or before January 26, 2026.

Fellowship Details
• Term: January–June 30, 2026
• Compensation: $600 stipend
• Time commitment: Approximately 8–12 hours per week during active concert cycles
• Concerts: Three spring concert cycles
• Location: Alexandria, VA (in person)

Responsibilities
• Lead 2–3 string sectional rehearsals during the fellowship
• Conduct one complete work per concert
• Assist with score preparation and rehearsal planning
• Attend all rehearsals and performances for assigned concert cycles
• Support artistic and concert production elements, including staging, visuals, and storytelling components
• Observe rehearsals from the audience perspective and participate in post-rehearsal discussions

Ideal Candidates
• Undergraduate or graduate students, or recent graduates (within 2 years)
• Prior conducting experience with student, university, or community ensembles
• Strong musicianship, artistic curiosity, and leadership potential
• Interest in shaping the concert experience beyond the podium

Conducting technique may still be developing; musical insight, preparation, and collaborative spirit are essential.
